N34 : Thirty-fourth lesson S00-TITLE : Cooking or cuisine? S01 : I just met Tom and I gather he's coming round for dinner tomorrow night. Is that right? S02 : Yes, I said I'd invite him one day, so I did. What's wrong with that? S03 : He's such a bore! Listening to his stories is like watching paint dry, only not so much fun. S04 : I grant you he's not the world's greatest conversationalist, but he's a nice enough guy. S05 : Anyway, what's done is done. Now I've got to think up a menu. S06 : Also, he's a damn food snob. Everything has to be line-caught, pan-fried and drizzled with olive oil. S07 : I can just hear him now: - That chocolate cake is to die for. - Your apple crumble is so moreish. S08 : I can't stand that kind of talk. It's one of my pet peeves. S09 : Don't be so crabby. He's coming for dinner, and that's that. S10 : In that case, I'll give you the bill of fare. Let's start with something wholesome, shall we? S11 : A hearty winter soup followed by oven-baked sea bass with sun-ripened vegetables. S12 : For pudding, sorry, dessert, we'll have toothsome organic ice-cream made with free-range eggs. S13 : And, to top it off, cellar-ripened cheese and bakery-fresh bread. S14 : For crying out loud, why can't we just have food rather than cuisine? S15 : Okay. I give up. You win. I'll just make baked beans on toast followed by jelly and custard. S16 : I'm serious. You can't beat plain, unfussy food like beef or pork, none of your fancy sauces, and a bottle of plonk. S17 : You have a point, I must admit. But I'd really like to serve something special. S18 : How about herb-infused loin of grass-reared Angus with a savoury jus and crispy Northern waffle? S19 : What's that, for heaven's sake? S20 : Roast beef, gravy and Yorkshire pudding. It's just so moreish! T00-TRANSLATE : Exercise: Translate T01 : They're coming round for dinner tonight and that's that. T02 : I gather from your CV that you have experience in marketing. T03 : She knows I would die for one of those new smart phones. T04 : Complex decisions are standard fare at senior management level. T05 : I get your point. I admit I hadn't thought of that aspect.
