N53 : Fifty-third lesson S00-TITLE : "Sports Round-Up" (Hosted by Stella Davis) S01 : Here to discuss the day's sporting events are Rod Mottram, the former Chelsea United striker, and one-time Welsh champion boxer David Jones. S02 : Evening lads. Let's start with the tennis and that straight-sets victory by Ivovna, the number-ten seed, in the women's semi-final. Rod? S03 : Magic. A walkover, wasn't it? Her poor opponent never knew what hit her. She tried hard, but at the end of the day, Ivovna outclassed her. S04 : Why's that, do you think? Better training? Tougher nerves? I mean, she took the first five games forty-love. S05 : Two reasons: a. she's as cool as a cucumber under pressure and b. she's more at home on grass than on clay. S06 : Anyway, she took out the world's top-seeded player without batting an eyelid or dropping a game. Hats off to her. S07 : Today was full of upsets. In football, European champions Rangers were knocked out of the FA Cup in the quarter-finals. S08 : It was sort of embarrassing, really. They played spectacularly right up to the last ten minutes, then their captain was sent off. S09 : After that, they ran around like chickens with their heads cut off. Awful, they were. S10 : They only lost one-nil, but the goal difference should have been a lot more. S11 : It was, you know, like they'd given up and gone home. I've never seen such an eleventh-hour collapse. S12 : Their coach claims never to listen to this programme. Shame, because he'll have missed some good advice: S13 : Your boys shouldn't have fallen to pieces like that. They should have kept their cool and played on. S14 : Let's move on to rugby union and the test match - or should I say whitewash? - between Wales and Australia. Dave? S15 : What are you looking at me like that for? We got hammered. The Aussies outplayed us. S16 : That's all there is to it. I can't even blame the referee; he reffed a good game. S17 : Actually I mustn't grumble because England fared even worse against New Zealand. S18 : It just goes to show that the old saying holds true: the English teach other nations how to play games S19 : and then they get beaten hands-down by them for the next hundred years. T00-TRANSLATE : Exercise: Translate T01 : Her new album has topped the charts for four weeks straight. T02 : Morning. Great match, wasn't it? Brilliant it was. T03 : I mean, our chances of winning were nil, but at the end of the day, you mustn't grumble. T04 : The Aussies outplayed us. That's all there is to it. T05 : Don't buy the new Xphone: a. it's expensive and b. it's complicated to use.
