N54 : Fifty-fourth lesson S00-TITLE : The Critics S01 : ("The Heist", directed by Sidney Winter) - This riveting thriller helmed by Sidney Winter proves that the seventy-year-old is at the top of his game. S02 : Two brothers are plotting a heist but their failsafe plan goes wrong from the outset S03 : and they wind up fleeing not only the cops but also their irate partners. S04 : The final shoot-out in a disused warehouse in downtown LA is a real nail-biter. S05 : If you want a quality crime caper, then this one's for you. Highly recommended. S06 : Sid Winter should retire once and for all from movie-making if his latest flick is anything to go by. S07 : Poorly plotted, hammily acted and just plain boring, the veteran director has clearly lost his edge. S08 : The actors do their best with a feeble script but Dan Dare is woefully miscast as the coke-snorting elder brother. S09 : "The Heist" can't hold a candle to the rest of Winter's work. A film for a wet afternoon only. S10 : ("Get a Life", directed by Sally Gallagher) - A romantic comedy that's also shrewd and funny is a rare animal indeed in today's blockbuster-oriented movie industry. S11 : But "Get a Life" is just that. It is also a triumphant return to form for Gallagher after a string of flops S12 : and proves that she's no slouch when it comes to directing comedy, even slapstick. S13 : Heading the all-star cast is Mary Angel, surely one of the most talented actors in the business. S14 : In her role as a wisecracking private eye, she's being hotly tipped for an Academy Award. S15 : The sleeper of the year, "Get a Life" has already taken fifty million at the American box office. See it. S16 : This excruciatingly unfunny film is so dismal that it makes the director's previous films look like masterpieces. S17 : To add insult to injury, the actual film runs for only one hour, with ten minutes of credits at the end. S18 : But for a scene-stealing cameo from Liv Allman as a clumsy maître d', the cast is wooden and lifeless. S19 : Even the photography is substandard: the movie looks as though it has been shot through a greasy lens. S20 : This is the kind of film that gives the genre a bad name. And me a bad headache. T00-TRANSLATE : Exercise: Translate T01 : What I like about Sidney is that he's always cracking jokes. T02 : The film was brilliantly plotted and all the actors were well cast. T03 : The company has a real edge over its competitors in terms of price. T04 : The movie's good but it fails to hold a candle to the rest of her work. T05 : He's tipped to win an Academy Award for his riveting performance as a veteran cop.
