N40 : Fortieth lesson S00-TITLE : Money matters S01 : I've just been over last quarter's figures with the accountants and they tell me we'll have to tighten our belts next year. S02 : Our turnover's up three and a half per cent and our return on equity is stable but our overheads have also increased. S03 : They've risen four and a quarter per cent. S04 : The interest on our borrowings is also higher because of the latest rate hike and investment in R&D is steep, but we can't cut back on that, can we? S05 : So where can we cut expenditure? Obviously, we're not going to take a cut in salary, are we? S06 : No way! Let's take a look at some of the staff bonuses, instead. S07 : Look at this: twenty thousand to Khan. That's a hell of a lot of money. S08 : Yeah, we're overpaying him but he's worth it. S09 : Anyway, he's the project manager on the RX 214, and look how successful that's been. S10 : You think so? Have a look at the figures: a nought point four per cent (0.4%) increase in sales. S11 : Not exactly what you'd call record-breaking, is it? And what about this? Nine hundred to Wilson. S12 : I agree. Money's tight so we'll just have to be less generous. S13 : This used to be a family business, but now we're in a multi-billion dollar industry and every penny counts. S14 : When I started the firm, I was broke. I went to the bank to ask for a loan and they turned me down. S15 : When I left the building, I found a quid lying on the ground, and I used it to buy an apple. S16 : I sold that apple at a profit and bought two more, which I then sold for twice the price I'd paid for them. S17 : I could have gone into the apple business, but then my uncle died shortly after and he left me ten million. S18 : Yeah, you were born with a silver spoon in your mouth. T00-TRANSLATE : Exercise: Translate T01 : Look how successful the project has been. T02 : It costs £300. That's a hell of a lot of money! T03 : You'll have to tighten your belts next year. Every penny counts. T04 : We went over the figures carefully, but we didn't find any mistakes. T05 : Inflation rose by 0.4% in the first quarter and 1.6% in the second.
